James Knapp:- Born 1941 at Hurlford. Educated Hurlford Junior Secondary and Kilmarnock Academy. NUR General Secretary 1983. Member of TUC 1983. TUC President 1993-94. General Secretary RMT transport union and died 13 August 2001 aged 60.
George Wylie:- Born 1910 at Hurlford. Awarded George Cross for bravery in honour of his attempts to defuse a German bomb which landed on St Paul's Cathedral, London. It took him 3 days to defuse the bomb and had it removed to Hackney Marsh where it was exploded. Mr Wylie never told anyone about the award and his family did not know of it until the medal was bought by a London bank who then presented it to St Paul's Cathedral. Wylie died at London in 1987. Annie Sloan Bone, politician born Hurlford 15/12/1905. Chairman Scottish Labour Party 1969; Provost Kilmarnock 1971-74; OBE 1975; married James Mackie (died 1976) she died 10/06/2003. "Annie was among the last of a dying breed" said Des Browne MP for Kilmarnock. During 1926 Annie left for Toronto for 6 years and she founded a left wing party that put up a candidate at the Canadian General elections. She returned home in 1933 and Annie was elected in May 1956 Councillor for 6th Ward of Kilmarnock Town Council
